Meshing Guidelines
• | Extrusion direction should be positive X-axis, Y-axis, or Z-axis. |
• | Mesh the profile region such that it is short (less than 0.25 * billet diameter) with many elements along the extrusion axis. If possible, enrich this region to p=2 also. |
Free Surface and Mesh Update
It is recommended to use profile deformation analysis to obtain a qualitative feel for the deformation of the extruded profile. For this reason, following guidelines are suggested.
• | Set CalcFreeSurface parameter to Yes. HyperXtrude will compute free surface deformation. |
• | If MeshUpdate is set to off, calculations to update the mesh will not be performed. You can, however, graphically view how these deformations will update the mesh using the Deform widget in HyperXtrude View port. |
• | If MeshUpdate is set to on, necessary calculations to update the mesh will be performed. Whether the mesh itself gets updated or not depends on the value of NumMeshUpdates or if you solve more than once. |
• | NumMeshUpdates can be set to more than 1 (for example 3). However, if the mesh is not fine enough, the free surface deformations may not be very smooth. The updated mesh might not be good to compute another solution. The recommended setting for NumMeshUpdates is 1, and the free surface feature should be used to study profile deflection qualitatively. In this case, the flow field is solved only on the original mesh. After convergence, the free surface and mesh update calculations are done only once, and the run is terminated. |
• | By default, a relaxation parameter of 0.25 is used for the calculated profile displacements. Therefore, if one wants to verify that velocity vectors are parallel to deformed free surface, a scale of 4 should be used on the Deform widget. |
