FEM Accuracy Check

Some factors affecting the accuracy are:
  • The idealization and assumptions made while designing the structure.
  • Checking the orientation and the cross-section of the beams that are defined in the structure and to also ensure the assignment of correct thicknesses for different components.
  • Check for any overlapping nodes or elements are present in the model.
  • Check to see if the mass allocated to every component matches the experimental model.
  • Check that all the loading and boundary conditions are applied at the correct locations.
  • Run an element quality check in HyperMesh to see if all the elements are within the acceptable criteria.
  • Check the consistency of the element local direction.

FEM Validation

A few ways to validate an FEA model are:
  • Experimental test

    The results from FEA can be compared to the experimental tests performed under similar loading conditions.

  • Comparing with existing documents

    The results from FEA can be compared to the results obtained from similar benchmarked models. The model can also be compared against established guidelines.

  • Comparing with classic solution

    The results from FEA can be compared with classical solutions. The model can also be compared against established guidelines.
