Magnetic application: definition

Available applications: reminder

Magnetic applications available in Flux are as follows:

  • Magneto Static application (2D/3D)
  • Transient Magnetic application (2D/3D)
  • Steady state AC Magnetic application (2D/3D)
  • Magneto Static - Integral Method (3D)

Specific features of these applications are presented in chapter Magnetic applications: principles.

Definition

To define complete conditions of modeling, the user must describe a certain number of specific characteristics, listed in the following blocks.

CM coefficient (2D/3D)

A coefficient CM (named Multiplying coefficient for computation of flux through coils) is introduced for the computation of flux through coils in the presence of symmetries and/or periodicities.

This coefficient, automatically computed by Flux, ensures coherence between the finite elements domain, having symmetries and/or periodicities, and the electric circuit within a circuit coupling.

Domain type (2D specific feature)

It is possible to carry out a 2D plane study or an axisymmetric study for the same geometric description (in the XY-plane). These two possibilities are presented in the table below.

Type of study domain
2D Plane

The device, described in a XY-plane cross-section, is infinitely extended in a direction (The depth of the device is then necessary for the computation of global quantities such as force, torque or magnetic energy)

Axisymmetric

The device, described in a XY-plane cross-section, has a symmetry around the Y-axis

Solver type (2D specific feature)

It is possible to use one of the Flux 2D solvers or one of the Flux 3D solvers for the same geometric and physical description. These two options are presented in the table below.

Solver
Flux 2D solver

A solving process is carried out with a Flux 2D solver (it is the default option)

Flux 3D solver

A solving process is carried out with a Flux 3D solver (an analysis of results is then carried out with the Flux 3D postprocessor)

Formulation model (3D specific feature)

In Flux, a formulation is associated to each region and indicates what equations are solved in the region and how (see Formulation: general aspects). Formulations are selected automatically by Flux.

To deal with certain particular cases, the user can intervene and manually select formulations (see Formulation: automatic mode / user mode).

The user mode is not described within this document (additional information is in volume 5 “Physical applications (complements for advanced user)”).

Function of approximation (3D specific feature)

In Transient Magnetic 3D and Steady state Magnetic 3D applications, two types of formulations can be used in regions of solid conductor type: “nodal” formulations or “edge” formulations (see Finite element computation, approximation functions).
