Longitudinal Engine/ Transverse Engine

Front wheel drive vehicle uses a transverse engine to avoid an inefficient right angle turn and packages in less space, while a rear wheel drive vehicle use a longitudinal engine. Engines crankshaft is perpendicular to the axis of the vehicle whereas in the crankshaft is parallel to the axis of the vehicle.
